I won’t lie …
I’m no fan of Donald Trump.
The intolerant fear monger squatting at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave (from time to time), has done few things to make me see any worthwhile qualities in him.
Greed and ego are his allies, compassion, honesty, and common sense are his adversaries.
But I’m an equal opportunity critic who claims no loyalty to any political party. To quote the great philosopher Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, “Neither party is mine, not the jackass or the elephant.”
Democrat and Republican are labels that I see as tragic. They are monikers that fools wear as badges of honor, and I’ll have no part of it. Of course, this declaration oftentimes falls on deaf ears. Especially these days, when it seems that anyone who criticizes Trump is immediately called out as a liberal, a Democrat, or a socialist. The absurdity is mind-boggling. Especially for a guy like me who embraces free markets and constitutional integrity far more than most folks who call themselves conservatives.
But today, I suspect the army of Trump supporters who got this man elected will love what I have to say right now.
Trump Condos in North Korea: A Brilliant Idea
I have no idea what went on between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un at their recent lonely hearts club meeting. Although I don’t buy for a second that North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat, as Trump had stated.
That being said, the President did say something that I thought made quite a bit of sense. Incidentally, it was also something that liberals denounced as foolish rhetoric and complete nonsense. I respectfully disagree.
During a post-summit press conference, Donald Trump said that North Korea’s beaches would be a great location for condos and hotels.
The comment was immediately condemned as something that trivialized the hostile regime of North Korea, which, in all fairness, does seem to have a weird fetish for starving its own people. But that’s a horrible way to look at it.
The idea of building condos and hotels on the beaches of North Korea is actually a brilliant fucking idea.
So many people in this country are quick to condemn the actions of communist dictators. Certainly I count myself as one of those people. But if you want to help people escape the shackles of communism, the best way to do it is with capitalism.
You want to end severe, violent communist rule? Put up a couple of Starbucks. Maybe a KFC, a couple of Apple Stores, and a Whole Foods. Once folks get a taste of all the wonderful things capitalism delivers, they’ll never go back to accepting the pitfalls and misfortunes of communism.
Although it is oftentimes hard for me to agree with the actions (and inactions) of Donald Trump, I’m not so stubborn as to ignore a good idea when I see one. And in the case of this President, good ideas seem to be in short supply. So I’m more than happy to embrace it.
In the meantime, let’s hope that Trump can somehow find his way to show the same respect he’s recently shown Kim Jong-un, to those coming to the US seeking refuge from certain death in other parts of the world.
I applaud Mr. Trump’s willingness to meet with Kim Jong-un, but doing so while ignoring the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free in this country, is a tragedy of epic proportions.
